About the Department
The Department of Social Sciences at SRM College of Agricultural Sciences comprises of Agricultural Economics, Agri-Business Management and Agricultural Extension which engaged in teaching, research and outreach activities with a clear and strong vision. There are 8 faculty in the department who are engaged in research, capacity building, policy interfacing,and education. They have received various prizes and honours, and they are all Ph.D. holders. The majority of the Professors are members in the professional organisations like the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Economics Research Associations and Journal of Extension Education. The major courses offered by this Department are Fundamentals of Agricultural economics, Farm management, Production and resource economics, Agricultural marketing trade and prices, Agricultural finance and cooperation, Agri-business management, Entrepreneurship development and business communication, Intellectual property rights, Rural sociology and educational psychology, Fundamentals of agricultural extension education, Communication skills and personality development and Rural agricultural work experience (RAWE).These foundational courses in the undergraduate degree programme offer a great platform for students aspiring to professional careers. Students could become entrepreneurs, banking professionals, Agricultural extension officers, and employees at the highest levels of national and state departments, both in India and overseas. The department’s objectives include providing excellent and high-quality education,conducting policy-oriented research in frontier areas covering agricultural and rural development issues, and providing policy support to state and central government. The department continuously works to advance the country’s agricultural growth and economic development. The department is also keen on maintaining strong linkages with stakeholders in the agriculture and allied sector as well as development partners leading to prosperity among farming community. Our long-term goals include establishing Agricultural Technology Information Centre, Incubation centre, the Directorate of Extension Education,and the Policy Centre for Agricultural Economics.
