About the Department
Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding comprises three disciplines namely, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Seed Science and Technology and Agricultural Biotechnology. It came into existent mainly to cater the instructional needs of the UG degree programme. In pursuit of providing innovative research to the society, PG programme in Genetics and Plant Breeding was launched during 2022.

Vision
The vision of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding is to progress as epicenter of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Seed Science and Technology and Agricultural Biotechnology, through appropriate integration of teaching and learning, developing tools to breed crop varieties in the challenging environments to cater the needs of farmers. This department produces plant breeding professionals with skills to provide service to improve the lives of farming community. It is aimed to promote the use of quality seeds and seed treatment technology for diversifying farmer’s choice including use of local genetic resources. It is to establish a leading laboratory with latest molecular tools to disseminate knowledge and skill to students to reach out national and global collaborators.
Mission
The mission is to impart high quality education by reasoning out modern technological advancements. Utilization of advancement in plant science technique to improve crops for greater food and nutrition security in Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu. Acceleration of genetic mechanism pertinent to crop improvement. Development of improved crop varieties with increased yield, resistance and wider adaptability to the change in the climate. To become center for excellence in Plant Breeding education. Imparting quality education with the instructional capacity and to relentlessly pursue new horizons of seed technology to extensive research. To access the farmers for good quality seeds. Empowering the graduates to start enterprise on their own behalf and deliver products as well as to develop abiotic stress tolerant varieties using molecular tools.
