The Department of Biotechnology, SRMIST, is proud to announce that 4 pre-final year students, Mr. Aman Dheer, Ms. Sristi Dey, Mr. Promit Sinha Roy and Mr. Dhaya Shankaran have been selected for the prestigious MITACS Globalink Research Internship 2022. MITACS provides all financial and local arrangements, including airfare, a living stipend, housing expenses, tuition fees, and medical insurance in the event of an emergency. Top-ranked applicants do a 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in a variety of academic fields, ranging from science, engineering, and mathematics to humanities and social sciences, from May to September each year. This is a competitive programme for international students from Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, Tunisia, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom offering $5000 as a stipend.
Aman Dheer attended various online workshops and gained training in Microbiology laboratory under the guidance of Dr. K. Ramani, Associate professor, Department of Biotechnology. Based on the training provided, he was offered the renowned MITACS scholarship and will be working under Dr. Ayush Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology and Medical Microbiology, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada under the project titled “Determining environmental determinants of Multidrug Resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii”. This research work is expected to uncover crucial information on role and effects of temperature on the Bacterial lipid profile with respect to Multidrug resistance.
Sristi Dey obtained research experience in the Animal Tissue Culture Laboratory, Department of Biotechnology, under the supervision of Dr. S. Sujatha, Associate Professor. Her major field of research is diabetes, and she was awarded the renowned MITCAS Scholarship under Dr. Carol Huang of the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, based on her laboratory expertise. She was interviewed in order to discuss the research project idea with the host professor. She will be working on a project to identify the role of placental lactogens in beta cell function regulation throughout pregnancy, and will be given the opportunity to learn the essential methods and get familiar with the relevant literature in order to complete her research.
Promit Sinha Roy gained his lab experience on “Animal Cell Culture Laboratory” under the guidance of Dr. S. Sujatha, Associate professor, Department of Biotechnology. He has been working under mam from second year onwards and gained extensive research experience. On the basis of his research experience, he was offered the prestigious MITACS scholarship and will be working under the guidance of Dr. Huiyan Li in the University of Guelph. He will be working on “Development of low-cost antibody microarrays for the quantification of cancer-related proteins”.
Dhaya Shankaran, has gained research experience in the “Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory” under the guidance of Dr. R. Pachaiappan, Associate Professor, Department of Biotechnology. Based on his research expertise, and his application, he was asked to sit for an interview for the projects selected. Upon successful completion of the interview process he got matched up with the summer internship project of Dr. Athar Ata, Department of Biochemistry, University of Winnipeg, Winnipeg, Canada. The research mainly revolves around identification of anti-diabetic compounds from indigenous plant sources.
We are glad that our students got selected for such a renowned scholarship and we believe that this will help give them the necessary exposure to fulfil their future goals and prospects. This will also bring about collaborations between the universities by sowing the seed for conducting prospective research in early college years to open up the door to worldwide opportunities.
