Earthquake Research Cell (EQRC)
Overview
SRMIST established an Earthquake Research cell (EQRC) in July 2012 for Advanced Research on the causes for origin, occurrence and prediction of Earthquake by better understanding the geodynamical behavior of this natural disaster on the globe. Further to establish the non-plate tectonics causes for the earthquake through re-looking into the existing causes and to develop computer simulation model for geodynamic character, prediction, prevention and management model to reduce the damages on the Earth.
Vision
To be a Global Centre of Excellence in Earthquake Research, Disaster Management and Mitigation studies
Mission
- To be a leading Centre for Earthquake Research of international repute for the investigation of Geodynamic activity.
- To enhance the knowledge based on research, education and information transfer to reduce the damages through systematic understanding of seismological characters.
- To provide capacity building to mitigate future earthquake scenario for better planning and development.

Welcome to EQRC
SRMIST is among the first few institutions in the country to establish the Earthquake Research Centre, thanks to the foresight of our Founder & Chancellor Dr. T R Paarivendhar. Our Centre’s focus in terms of geographic regions are Sikkim – Darjeeling, Himalaya region in the North East, Andaman Region (islands in the Bay of Bengal), Ponnair Basin area in the South and Gujarat in the West. We have 12 themes that we are actively pursuing at EQRC, SRMIST. The Researchers are senior and tenured specialists in various practice areas who contribute to the furthering of our research activity. Our students and scholars who get to work at our EQRC stand to benefit immensely from our senior Faculty Members’ guidance and applied (on-the-field) learning. At EQRC, it is our endeavor to accomplish breakthrough research and contribute new ideas, concepts and solutions.

Research Theme
Our research themes allow us to build on our existing strengths and invest in novel complementary areas. EQRC’s advantage is that our research is not confined to our center and there is a sizable proportion of our centre’s activity involving work on-field. Major themes of our research are as follows:
- Seismic hazard assessment
- Active tectonic study - Identification of Active fault zones.
- Geomorphic and morphotectonic anomaly- analysis of geomorphic indices, paleo-seismic evidences
- Crustal deformation studies and development of deformation model and 3D visualization.
- Analysis of epicenter data and prediction through ANN model.
- Quantification of seismic energy and simulation model
- Mathematical model through continuum / regression model.
- Remote sensing based surface fault mapping and geotectonic analysis.
- GIS based seismic database creation.
- Development of customized Seismic Information System.
- Designing seismic resistant structures.
- Disaster planning and Management
Focused Areas
- Sikkim- Darjeeling Himalaya, N-E region
- Andaman Region
- Ponnair basin, South India
- Gujarat, western India
Facilities
Our world-class facilities make SRMIST one of the India’s best universities for research and study. SRMIST is lead by the visionary Founder and Chancellor who has embedded research orientation and have supported us through investing in a wide range of facilities and resources to support our cutting-edge research. Whether it is subscription to internationally important knowledge inputs and reference material to state of the art labs, we have it all at our EQRC. Corporate Organizations and academics are invited to make use of our facilities and research services, including using our labs and equipment and consultancy services. Following is a selection of our research facilities
Publications & Patents
The experiential insights and research outcomes are often carried for publication in the nationally and internationally renouned Journals. Our researchers get to submit and present papers among the specialists from across the world on specialized topics connected to Earthquake Research. SRMIST is a platform for anybody seeking to create a dent through their commitment and hard work as we can count on some of the most valuable and best research ecosystem. This automatically means there are so many opportunities to pick, prepare and submit papers. We are proud that our faculty members and alumni have published book-chapters and books that are often reference literature to the current day students and research scholars worldwide. An indicative list of some of these publications and patents are mentioned here in this section.
