Special Machines and drives laboratory
The Laboratory serves as a hub for fostering research practices among undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students, research scholars, and faculty members. It is equipped with an array of advanced research equipment in the realm of power electronics, drives, and power quality. These resources provide an invaluable platform for theoretical exploration and practical experimentation, enabling the development of innovative solutions and the advancement of knowledge in these crucial areas.
For UG and PG students, the Laboratory offers hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, allowing them to deepen their understanding of power electronics and drives through practical application. Similarly, research scholars benefit from access to state-of-the-art equipment, which facilitates their investigations into various aspects of power quality, power electronics, and related fields. Faculty members also utilize the Laboratory to support their research endeavours, leveraging its resources to conduct experiments, collaborate with colleagues and students, and publish findings in academic journals. By staying at the forefront of research in power electronics and drives, faculty members contribute to the advancement of their discipline while inspiring the next generation of researchers. It aims at providing the knowledge about various advanced software packages and hardware setup in Power Electronics and Drives.

Specifications
The Special Machines and Drives Laboratory has been actively utilized across various academic and consultancy activities. M.Tech Power Electronics and Drives students extensively use the laboratory facilities for carrying out their project work, while PhD research scholars leverage the lab for their research activities, leading to the publication of around 200 research papers by scholars and faculty members over the last five years. Undergraduate students also benefit from the laboratory, for doing their Minor project, Major project work and Multidisciplinary project works. Additionally, faculty members employ Fluke meters and thermal imagers from the lab to support consultancy assignments and assist the electrical maintenance team in conducting routine maintenance tasks. Through these consultancy efforts, the laboratory has contributed to generating approximately 3 lakhs in revenue over the past five years

This laboratory serves as a valuable platform for undergraduate students to execute and validate their Minor Projects (18EEP107L), Multi-Disciplinary Design tasks, and Major Projects (18EEP109L). It also supports postgraduate students and research scholars in conducting their research activities effectively.

Specification: OP4510 - RT lab
Unique Features: The OP4510 is a compact, entry-level simulator that combines all OPAL-RT’s strengths in high-performance Rapid Control Prototyping and Hardware-in-the-loop simulation. The RT-LAB simulation software platform is used to perform simulations of models in real time. RT-LAB’s features allow you to better control, visualize, access and customize your simulation projects. Fully integrated with MATLAB/Simulink, RT-LAB enables Simulink models to interact with the real world in real-time. This makes RT-LAB an ideal software platform of real-time simulation for engineers to rapidly develop and validate their applications, regardless of their complexity. This equipment is a cornerstone tool for faculty members and research scholars, serving as a vital resource for their research endeavours across diverse fields.
Applications: As a multi-domain platform, RT-LAB provides flexible and scalable solutions for the power systems, power electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries. Bench Top and Portable Test and Measurement System.
Outcomes: Around 120 research papers are published in reputed indexed journals.

Specifications: dSPACE - Model: CLP1104
Unique Features: The DS1104 R&D Controller Board is entry-level system with I/O interfaces and a real-time processor on a single board that can be plugged directly into a PC. It upgrades your PC to a development tool for rapid control prototyping and is ideal for developing smaller control applications. Real-Time Interface provides Simulink blocks for graphical I/O configuration. The real-time hardware based on PowerPC technology and its set of I/O interfaces make the controller board an ideal solution for developing controllers in various fields.
Applications: Developing controllers in various fields, such as drives, robotics, and aerospace.

Unique Features: Power Quality and Energy Analyzer are designed to help you minimize downtime, quickly troubleshoot power quality issues and easily discover the costs of wasted energy. Downtime is expensive and getting the data you need to solve critical power quality problems quickly is key. Multiple parameters are measured simultaneously and displayed in formats that quickly describe overall power quality health. Data can be accessed as simple digital values, trend graphs, waveforms, or phasor diagrams. The data can also be analyzed and organized into tabular formats. Detailed event data allows you to see the magnitude, duration and time stamping of anomalies enabling you to rapidly correlate the problems you are experiencing in your facility. The faculties and research scholars use this equipment for doing research and consultancy works.
Specification: Fluke 434 / 435 Power Quality and Energy Analyzers
Applications: Electrical Energy Audit, Demand-Side Management, Harmonics Study, Motor Analysis, Industrial Facilities Monitoring.
Outcomes: Around 15 consultancy works are undertaken across various industries in India, amounting to a total value of 3 Lakhs.

FLUKE – THERMAL IMAGER (T1401PRO)
Specification: Fluke Ti401 PRO Thermal Camera (640 x 480 pixels)
Unique Features: Thermal imager to monitor the condition and characteristics of your equipment against predetermined tolerances. This will help predict possible malfunctions or failures, allowing you to repair or replace the deteriorating components before they fail completely and potentially cause unplanned downtime. Choose the thermal camera that gives you in-focus images in a matter of seconds. See small details in the image and discover anomalies faster with 640 x 480 resolution thermal images. Manage data, capture multiple measurements (mechanical, electrical and thermal) and organize them by piece of equipment with Fluke Connect software.
Applications: Electrical Energy Audit, Demand-Side Management, Motor Analysis.
Outcomes: Around 25 consultancy projects are undertaken across various industries in India.

Specification: 500V/80A/12KW (IT6012D-500-80)
Unique Features: single channel output programmable DC power supply, is applicable in laboratories and automatic test system to provide high-power and stable DC supply. The feature of auto ranging output enables a wide range of voltage and current combinations at full power, unprecedentedly flexible. IT6000D Series has wide range of applications and its single unit provides power range of 6kW to 144kW, current up to 8000A, as well as its voltage up to 2250V. Besides, IT6000D provides multi built-in communication interfaces to simplify and accelerate the testing development. The compact 3U design saves rack space. Multi units of the same model can be paralleled easily to have higher power and the maximum power can reach up to 2 MW. Power efficiency up to 92%, High power density supported by advanced SiC technology is up to 3U/18kW.

Specification: Zynq 7000 SoC XC7Z020-CLG484-1 (512 MB DDR3, 256 Mb Quad-SPI Flash)
Unique Features: Zed Board is a low-cost development board for the Xilinx Zynq-7000 all programmable SoC. This board can be operated through VHDL coding and MATLAB Simulink. Target applications include video processing, reconfigurable computing, motor control, software acceleration, Linux/Android/RTOS development, exploring RISC processors (ARM), and general Zynq-7000 AP SoC prototyping.
Applications: Developing controllers for Power Electronic converters
Outcomes:
- One day workshop conducted on “Programming of FPGA controller for power electronics drives”.
- Around 10 research papers are published in reputed indexed journals.
DC shunt motor and Induction motor is controlled through IPM based FPGA controller.

Specifications: IT7906P-350-90 350V/90A/6KVA grid simulator 3U Along with IT-E117-RS232
Unique Features: The IT7900 series is a programmable, four-quadrant grid simulator. It is also a four-quadrant power amplifier, which can be used to test various grid-connected equipment. With advanced SiC technology, a single unit of IT7900 can realize the anti-islanding protection test through islanding mode(RLC settable). Besides, the power density of IT7900 series is extremely high, 6kVA in 1U, 15kVA in 3U. After parallel connection, the power can be extended to 960kVA at most. Rich operating modes meet various test requirement of single-phase, three-phase, reverse-phase and multi-channel. In reverse mode, the voltage can be extended to 200% of the rated voltage. The strong arbitrary waveform editing function can simulate various power grid disturbance waveforms, making it an ideal choice for testing and R&D laboratories.

Specification: 2.5 KW with Wavect controller
Unique Features: This solar module and solar emulator for 1 KW with Wavect controller contribute to the efficiency, reliability, and versatility of the solar module and emulator system, making them suitable for a wide range of applications in research, testing, and development within the solar energy industry. The Solar Module and Solar Emulator of 2.5 kW, PV array interfaced with grid. Inverter unit of 10 kVA with embedded boost converter facilitates grid synchronization. Grid compliances, feedback from grid taken care of a Wavect (FPGA Board). Control algorithm is developed is MATLAB/Simulink and then deployed in FPGA through serial port. PV Emulator embodies a boost converter unit, isolation transformer, auto transformer and FPGA controller. PV array is simulated and developed in MATLAB/Simulink and then deployed in FPGA through serial port.
Outcomes: Solar module and solar emulator for 1 KW with Wavect controller output is synchronized with grid.

Unique Features: In electric drives and machines, such as induction motors, permanent magnet motors, and linear motors. These loads require variable frequency and voltage AC power to control their speed and torque.

Unique Features: Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are semiconductor devices that are based around a matrix of configurable logic blocks (CLBs) connected via programmable interconnects. FPGAs can be reprogrammed to desired application or functionality requirements. FPGA processor board for different control algorithms deployment for inverters control
- Developers design prototypes on FPGA to incrementally mature the design before finalizing it at tape-out.
