SPF Animal facility
About
A Specific Pathogen Free Animal Facility (SAF) is established by SRM Institute of Science and Technology in collaboration with Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India under the project “SRM-DBT Partnership Platform for Contemporary Research Services and Skill Development in Advanced Life Science Technologies”.
The objective of SAF is to provide facility and resources for the researchers to conduct animal research studies, housing of laboratory animals, training researchers with strict adherence to the CPCSEA and in-house guidelines resulting in humane and ethical usage of laboratory animals.
Infrastructure
- The animal facility is spread around 2500 sq. ft., designed and built in accordance with CPCSEA specifications
- Class 100000 clean room facility with HVAC with 20 – 30 air changes per hour
- Chiller plant with 45 ton refrigeration capacity
- Controlled environment with 22 ± 1 °C and 50 ± 5 % RH
- The clean room is divided into mice and rat holding rooms, animal receiving area, quarantine rooms, procedure room, necropsy room, sterilized feed and bedding material storage rooms, primary change room etc.
- Separate AHUs for animal rooms to avoid cross contamination
- Individually Ventilated Cage (IVC) system with HEPA filter
- Three level pressure gradient system
- Dedicated semi-automatic double door autoclave for efficient sterilization of feed, bedding materials and other items.
- All the animal rooms are provided with biosafety cabinets and dynamic pass boxes to avoid contamination
- Rodent isoflurane anaesthesia system
- Perkin Elmer In vivo imaging system
- CCTV surveillance system
- 24 hours power back up
Accreditation
The facility is registered with the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) under Ministry Of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Govt. of India and operates in compliance with CPCSEA Guidelines.

Bookings
Submit the duly filled Cage space request form along with IAEC approval certificate. Allocation of cages will be based on the availability of the cages. You are requested to submit the form at least 45 days in advance.
