About the Department

Department of Pharmacology is a Pre-clinical science department that form a part of the SRM College of Pharmacy, SRMIST and is focused on basic life sciences research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching for B.Pharm, Pharm.D and Postgraduate students also training and development of graduates. The development of new and successful drugs requires advances and insights generated by scientific research. Pharmacology is all about “Finding out how drugs work”. It is concerned with the effects of drugs on living organisms and their components such as cells, membranes, organelles, enzymes and DNA, Pharmacology affects us all, almost every day.

The Department of Pharmacology is at the forefront of research into the effects of drugs and other molecules on biological systems with a view to understanding the mechanisms of the human body. Pre-clinical research in the department aims to screen new lead molecules upon living systems as the first step towards a greater understanding of disease and effective treatment. The Pharmacology Department has special interests in Diabetes and associated degenerative diseases, Neuroscience, PCOS studies, Reno protective Gastroenterology and Oncology. The research is done with state-of-the-art equipment in facilitated laboratories with good technical support. Faculty in the department present lectures, seminars and tutorials for undergraduate and postgraduate students on the mechanism of action, pharmacological and adverse effects of the drugs.

The Pharmacology museum displays various drug samples, and student made models system-wise as per the pharmacology syllabus. The students are expected to study the drugs and the different dosage forms displayed in the museum from time-to-time during the course. An additional museum in the corridor of the department was created for easy visibility and access to the students.

Currently, there are 7 faculty, 20 Postgraduate students and over 15 research scholars in the Department. Faculty, research scholars and postgraduate students are actively involved in research projects. The department has succeeded in finding suitable employment for those who have completed M.Pharm. Many of our alumni are very well placed, either in India or abroad.

Welcome message

It is my great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the Department of Pharmacology, SRM College of Pharmacy. The Department offers training in pharmacology and toxicology to both undergraduate and post-graduate students which involves pre-clinical screening of natural, synthetic drugs using animals. We also train post graduate & doctoral candidates to perform research in alternative to animal models for testing of drugs, cell culture techniques which enable them to acquire skills in research, regulatory, industrial as well as healthcare delivery. The Department has highly qualified faculty members and research scholars in diverse areas of Pharmacology, whose profiles are indicated also on website. I hope our department will provide you with sufficient information to meet your needs as well as introduce you to our aspirations and achievements.

Our Professors are the reason for our continued ability to foster vibrant and value adding learning experiences for our students. The success of our students’ in terms of their learning and overall development enabled by our faculty members is an area of focus of Leadership at SRMIST.
