About the Department
The department of Mechatronics Engineering at SRM Institute of Science and Technology was started in the year 2005, first of its kind in private university in India with a vision to impart multidisciplinary skills and knowledge to the students which is a most sought skill at present. The advancement of Robotics, automation, industry 4.0 has increased the demand and reach of mechatronics engineering. The department offers multiple programs with key emphasis on experiential learning.
The department is known for its state of the art facilities and multi domain faculties making the program unique in our university. The department, apart from the regular program, is engaged in many other activities such as industrial consultancy, industrial training, academic and industry-collaborated research, organizing workshops, seminars and conferences. The department has four main academic laboratories equipped with modern industrial standard items such as industrial collaborative robot arm, autonomous mobile robots, mixed signal oscilloscopes, advanced control plants, advanced pneumatics systems, programmable logic controllers, embedded controllers, real-time controllers, machine vision systems, high precision test and measurement equipment’s.
The laboratories also host a number of engineering software for design, analysis and simulation of mechatronics systems. Faculty members from different domains of engineering with many specialized in mechatronics engineering becomes one of the unique strength of our department. With more than a decade of existence, our alumni is working around the globe in reputed companies/institutions which further adds feather to our success.

Welcome message
It gives me an immense pleasure to invite you to the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at SRMIST. Our Institute is one of the very few private Universities in India who have started the Mechatronics Program in the year 2005. In the present situation, a considerable amount of assiduity is being provided to multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary skills among the technical fraternities. The student community also concentrates more on such skills to meet up the requirements for technical advancement in any type of industries. This is highly possible with learning Mechatronics Concepts which converts traditional engineering and modern engineering. Our curriculum has been designed to impart structured theory and extensive practical experience in all the sub-fields contributing to Mechatronics Engineering to make our engineers as globally competent experts in multi-disciplinary system Integration. By considering the near future technology requirement, we are running various programs in the field of Mechatronics and its associated specialization courses such as Robotics, Immersive Technologies, Autonomous vehicle technology, Industrial IoT and Systems Engineering. Our cutting edge lab facilities, multidisciplinary faculty, and sophisticated curriculum combined with experiential teaching and learning methods guarantee that our students are prepared for better careers as mechatronics engineers. I’m hoping the department website will provide you a glimpse of what we do in the department and extend an invitation for you to visit our campus to learn more.
Programs
Postgraduate
The MTech Mechatronics engineering program was started in the year 2018. The MTech program admits candidates graduated with B.E./B.Tech/ Equivalent degrees in a wide range of disciplines which may be broadly classified as Mechanical stream (e.g. B.E. Mechanical, B.Tech Aerospace, etc) and Non-Mechanical stream (B.E. Electrical and Electronics Engineering, B.Tech Software Engineering). In order to bring the students under one perspective, a bridge course is offered to make the students understand the basics of mechanics, electrical and electronics systems).
Ph.D
The department offers Ph.D. programs in multidisciplinary domains which include smart manufacturing, robotics, industrial automation, Artificial intelligence, control systems, machine vision smart actuators and systems etc. The state-of-the-art facilities and highly skilled cum experienced faculty ensure to provide the best research experience for the scholars.
Minor programs
The department offers minor program for other academic major streams (like computer science, aerospace, mechanical etc.) of our university. This is to enable students to expose themselves outside their major discipline based on their interest which may be beneficial for their career advancement. The minor is framed to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge in the stream chosen through additional courses. The minor programs offered are as below •Minor in Mechatronics Engineering •Minor in Robotics
Research
Research is as important as teaching which defines the advancement and status of the university. SRMIST motivates students and faculties through various research funding schemes to convert their research ideas to prototypes. The multidisciplinary nature of Mechatronics engineering allows our students or faculties to take up research problems in various domains like smart manufacturing, robotics, mechatronics and automation, AI and machine vision, medical, etc. which paves the way for collaborative research across various disciplines of engineering. Department faculties have nurtured students for research and entrepreneurship through multidisciplinary projects which has helped them significantly to either start-up or to obtain masters/research positions in reputed universities.
