About the Department
The Department of Mechanical Engineering, established in 1985, is one of the pioneering departments of SRMIST. The present faculty strength is 107 of which 76 are with PhD and the rest are on the verge of completion. More than 2000+ research papers have been published in leading international journals with high impact factor and more than 1000 papers have been presented in international conferences.
The department is functionally divided into three broad areas of specialization: (i) Design (ii) Manufacturing and (iii) Thermal. The department also offers Doctoral programs in these three areas of specializations. The National Board of Accreditation has accredited the Mechanical Engineering programme for six years from the year 2021 to 2027. The B.Tech. – Mechanical Engineering program at Kattankulathur campus is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org.
The department offers Semester Abroad Program for our UG students in which they will begiven the opportunity of a lifetime to spend a semester at some of the best universities in the world such as – Carnegie Mellon, Northeastern University, SUNNY Buffalo, University of Wisconsin, UC Berkeley, George Mason, New Hampshire, Lille Catholic University, University of Western Australia, Western Ontario, Queen’s University and many others.

A warm greetings from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, SRMIST, Kattankulathur. It is one of the oldest departments established in the year 1985. The department has a team of dedicated faculty members with rich teaching experience and research potential. The department has a very good infrastructure, 31 laboratories with state of art software and hardware to meet the curricular requirements. In addition research centres and research laboratories are available to meet the research requirements. Realizing the importance of Industry-Instute interaction, the department established a strong collaboration with the prominent industries, research organizations and reputed institutes.
The department offers Undergraduate (UG), Post Graduate (PG) and Ph.D degree programs. The three UG programmes offered by the department include B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering, B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Automation and Robotics. The B.Tech. – Mechanical Engineering program offered at Kattankulathur campus is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). With a strong under graduate programme, the department has produced eminent engineers who are committed to highest professional standards in Engineering and Technology. To address the need of specialist in various inter disciplinary streams, the department offers post graduate programmes in Computer Aided Design, Robotics, Solar Energy and Thermal Engineering.
I am really elated to inform that the department stands on the strength of experienced and well qualified faculty members who are dedicated to teaching and also involved in up-gradation of knowledge and their research potential is evident through numerous publications and patents. We offer our students an excellent educational experience that combines intellectual rigor and cross-disciplinary breadth in an organized, student-centered environment. The course contents are periodically updated under the guidance of industry experts for introducing new scientific and technological developments. Our department maintains active research groups for carrying out collaborative and interdisciplinary research. Our students are encouraged to undertake various research projects, undergo semester abroad programme(SAP) in some of the leading International universities. We are happy to share that many students are pursuing higher studies in leading universities in India and abroad. With great demand in industry and great placement opportunities, the department stands tall and proud.

The research work at Mechanical Department includes domains related to Biomechanics, Vehicle dynamics, Condition monitoring, Machine dynamics and optimization dynamics, Tribology, Additive Manufacturing, Composite Materials, Metal Forming, Micro Manufacturing, Welding, Thermal Energy Storage, Bio-Energy, Solar Energy, Fluid flow and Heat transfer and Nano Additives, etc.,
Centers of Excellence
To augment both experimental and computational research in the domain of composite and advanced materials, including advanced manufacturing processes, a Centre for Composites and Advanced Materials has been created within Department of Mechanical Engineering, SRMIST, Kattankulathur campus.
Placement
Mechanical Engineers have a broad spectrum of opportunities in Industrial giants in the field of Energy, Oil and Gas, Manufacturing, Steel, Automotive, Robotics and Information Technologies. Many IT industries also have CAD/CIM divisions, which increases the job potential of mechanical engineers in IT industries too. Around 70% of the students are placed in reputed industries practicing core and allied engineering, through campus recruitment and the remaining 30% prefer higher studies in India and abroad. The consistent placement record illustrates the commitment to the success of the Institute.
- Training and Placement Cell is an integral part of our Institute.
- A dedicated software “SUPERSET” is the Official University Recruitment Platform for all placement process.
- Superset is a one-stop solution for end-to-end Placement services, ranging from effective corporate outreach tracking to a seamless communication for the Administrators in campuses among themselves as well as with the students.
- The department placement cell with its dedicated faculty coordinators organizes the entire placement and training activities in line with the Institute’s Career Centre.
- The department placement cell also organises the “Connect Sessions” a series of motivational talks and preparation sessions, in which the students interact with the Department Alumni who are placed in-campus and working in prominent Industries.
- Apart from placement activities, the placement cell also guides the interested students in opportunities available for higher studies in their area of interest in prestigious institutes in India and abroad.
- The Mechanical Department through Professional Societies like The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and The Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE) provides additional placement and internship opportunities to student members in these organisations through SRM Students Chapters.

Teaching environment and quality are central to SRMIST’s capabilities profile. Our Professors are the reason for our continued ability to foster vibrant and value adding learning experiences for our students. The success of our students in terms of their learning and overall development enabled by our faculty members is an area of focus of leadership at SRMIST. Many opportunities are provided to our faculty members to conduct research and engage with the industry in consultancy and other projects. This platform brings to our faculty members an opportunity to expand their knowledge contribution as well as bring those rich experiential inputs to the classrooms and labs therefore benefiting our students.
Infrastructure
The Department of Mechanical Engineering has over 29 laboratories including thermal engineering, heat-transfer, dynamics, metallurgy, metrology, fuels, Robotics, Rapid prototype etc. Modern computing facilities are available for students at the Computer Aided Design and Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratories, Computer Programming laboratories and Computational Fluid Dynamics.
