The Department of Mathematics, College of Engineering and Technology, SRM Institute of Science and Technology is a thriving community of dedicated teachers, diligent researchers and devoted students sharing the enthusiasm for Mathematics. The department was established in the year 1985 and since then it has shown continuous improvement in both academic and research criteria.
The department offers courses in Engineering Programmes and Research Programmes at SRMIST. There are 122 PhD-qualified faculty members, among whom 32 PDF and 1 RA. The department also supports 129 research scholars. Esteemed Professors Dr. Peeyush Chopra (Retd. Prof, IIT Kanpur), Dr. Mohan K. Kadalbajoo (Prof, IIT Kanpur) and Dr. Debabrata Datta (Retd. Senior Scientist, BARC, Mumbai) are the Adjunct Professors and they guide the department in all its endeavours.
Since its inception, the department has obtained a substantial amount of Rs. 322 Lakhs from various funding agencies like DST, NBHM, SRMIST and BRNS for research projects. Apart from regular academic activities, the Department of Mathematics also conducts National/International research workshops, symposia, conferences and conventions every year. This was mainly due to the incredible effort of the Mathematics Faculty members and the tremendous support from the Administrators of SRMIST.

Our faculty members actively engage in cutting-edge research across Pure and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, creating a vibrant environment that encourages students to tackle real-world challenges and excel as leaders in their fields.
With 108 full-time faculty members and adjunct professors, the department has consistently produced high-quality research outputs in terms of publications and has received research funding from various agencies, including SERB-DST, UGC, NBHM, BARC, and SRMIST. Our PhD graduates are making significant contributions in national & international academic institutions, research labs and data science companies, showcasing the strength of our academic training.
Beyond teaching, the department plays an instrumental role in developing problem-solving and computational skills through its Sri Ramanujan Mathematics Club, established in 1991. This club organizes the Intra-Collegiate Mathematics Festival (IMF) and the Engineering Mathematics Festival (EMF), the latter attracting significant student participants from other institutions. The department also organizes annual national and international conferences, workshops, and faculty development programs, bringing in esteemed experts to enhance participants’ exposure to the latest trends.

The PhD programme in the Department of Mathematics at the College of Engineering and Technology started in the year 2004. Research in Mathematics varies over diverse research arena right from core areas to interdisciplinary fields. Presently, the department supports around 150 research scholars (Full time / Part Time (Internal / External)). In addition to the funded support from SRMIST, eligible research scholars are engaged in funded projects from agencies like DST – SERB, BARC, SRMIST and others.
Though many of our graduate students opt for higher studies, the department of Mathematics gives utmost importance to placements of the students in reputed industries and corporate. The department has a placement team who under the guidance of Head of the Department will coordinate with the centralized university Placement cell and facilitate the placement process. The department mould their students by conducting many training programmes and mock interviews. Alumni students are invited for these sessions and they share their experience and strategies with present graduate students.
Teaching environment and quality are central to SRMIST’s capabilities profile. Our Professors are the reason for our continued ability to foster vibrant and value adding learning experiences for our students. The success of our students in terms of their learning and overall development enabled by our faculty members is an area of focus of leadership at SRMIST. Many opportunities are provided to our faculty members to conduct research and engage with the industry in consultancy and other projects.
