About the Department

The SRM College of Agricultural Sciences comprises specialized units that excel in horticulture education, research, and practical application:

Unit 1: Fruit Science

The Unit of Fruit Science at SRM College of Agricultural Sciences caters to multidisciplinary activities such as teaching, research, and extension. Teaching is the prime objective, and offering courses in fundamentals of horticulture, production technology of tropical and sub-tropical fruit crops, temperate fruit crops, dry land horticulture and orchard and estate management to the UG program. The PG program in M.Sc. (Hort.) Fruit science is offered and the following courses are offered for the PG program viz., Tropical, subtropical, and temperate fruit production, minor fruit production, growth and development of fruit crops, propagation and nursery management of fruit crops, breeding of fruit crops, and canopy management in fruit crops.

Unit 2: Vegetable Science

The Department of Vegetable Sciences was established in June 2023 The department’s primary objectives include genetic enhancement of vegetable crops for higher yield, better quality, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses; improved production under polyhouse, shade net, mist chamber, and protection technologies

Unit 3 – Floriculture and Landscape Architecture

The Unit offers courses for Undergraduate students in floriculture, landscaping and medicinal crop disciplines of horticulture. The Unit maintains the flowers and medicinal crops cafeteria, arboretum, botanical garden and nursery. Hands-on training is offered to students on value addition of flower crops, landscape designing, gardening, preparation of bottle gardens, terrarium and bonsai making.

Unit 4 – Post-Harvest Technology

SRM College of Agricultural Sciences introduced Post-harvest technology as one of the units from the Department of Horticulture. Post-harvest technology is an assortment of handling procedures and practices with the application to maintain the quality of fresh fruits and vegetables from the time of harvest to consumption. It focuses on the research and application techniques to preserve the quality of harvested agricultural and horticultural commodities to prevent loss.
