About the Department
The Department of Genetic engineering is one of the top notches in the School of Bioengineering, SRMIST, which facilitates cutting edge research in modern biology. We are committed to training budding scientists who pursue a greater understanding of the biological processes and manipulation of these processes for more excellent benefits at the lowest environmental and economic costs. Genetic Engineering is the backbone of biotechnology.
The opportunities for a genetic engineer in clinical, pharma, genetic counselling, gene therapy and applied genetics are boundless. The department aims to produce genetic engineers who excel in genomics and gene editing. The department has brought together state of the art laboratories and a highly experienced and dedicated team of faculty. Our faculty members have garnered extramural research funding of INR 21.83 Crores. The department takes immense care to impart knowledge in a highly interactive mode, hands-on training in advanced molecular biology techniques and cutting-edge research opportunities. Since 2004, We have been producing students readily acceptable for research and industry environments. Next to MBBS, our programs are the most sorted programs for biology students in India and abroad.

Welcome to the Department of Genetic Engineering! Our department provides a stimulating environment of academic excellence and training opportunities for the students in the fields of bioengineering, life sciences and genetics. Our dedicated faculty have strong expertise in broad areas of genetics and biotechnology and are spearheading exciting research programmes. Our undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes offer an unparalleled learning experience and we train our students to be creative and robust researchers. We provide strong mentoring support to the students towards opportunities in academia, biotechnology R&D and pharmaceutical industries. We are committed to nurture each student’s potential and to facilitate their transformation into diligent scientists and entrepreneurs.
Programs Offered
Postgraduate
We are the pioneer in offering MTech Genetic Engineering in the world since the year 2008! The curriculum and syllabus was revised in the year 2019 by including latest developments in research (approved by the 40th Academic Council Meeting on 20th and 29th March, 2019). We offer specialization in human genetics, plant genetics and microbial genetics.
Research
Cutting edge research at PhD level can be carried in several areas including genomics, gene editing, cancer, neuroscience, metabolic engineering, DNA barcoding, stem cell biology, plant-microbe interaction, human genetics, etc. Refer faculty profile for current areas of research and relevant publications.
B.Tech Minor Program - Cancer Genetics
All the B Tech students of the College of E&T, SRMIST, are eligible for this program. This is an 18-credit program that will fetch a B Tech (Minor) certificate along with the regular B Tech certification. One important eligibility to join the program is that prospective students should not have any pending arrear exams.
Research
The world has realised the miracles of Genetic Engineering in agriculture – higher yield and better varieties of crops; in medicine – diagnostics and cures that were only a dream a few years back. The department has developed state of the art research facilities, and several of our faculty members have very productive national and international research collaborations. The department dramatically prioritises externally funded research projects from India and abroad. Collaborative and interdisciplinary research is active in genomics, cancer biology, applied microbiology, bio-energy, plant, animal and microbial genetics. The department is dedicated to impact-making biological discoveries and vital research publications. The department has identified a few focus areas in which it possesses strong representation and leadership – Genomics, Cancer Biology, Microbiology and Integrative Biology. Some of the essential facilities available in the department are the transgenic greenhouse facility, automated DNA sequencing platforms, biological mass spectrometry facility, zebrafish facility, fluorescence spectroscopy, light microscopy facility, gene pulser, etc.
Placement
The Department of Genetic Engineering gives a wide range of placement opportunity ranging from placements in Biotechnology core companies, IT sector and business analytics companies. The department has a placement team who under the guidance of Head of the Department will coordinate with the centralized university Placement cell and facilitate the placement process. Department of Genetic Engineering has a consistent record of gaining a very high percentage of job placements over the years. The students of Genetic Engineering have been finding coveted positions in various companies that visit the campus every year. The salary package that students offered is on par with international standards.
The excellent infrastructure of the varsity, department research facilities, good lab infrastructure develop the students in all perspectives and be prepared for his/her placements. The placement team of Genetic Engineering along with the department alumni association (GEA) organizes many invited talks where the alumni share their experience and the present market trends. The consistent placement record illustrates the commitment of the department towards student’s placements, and also the success of the Institution.
