About the Department
French is a romance language spoken as a first language by most people from France, Second language speakers of French are throughout the world. French is estimated as having between 70 million and 110 million native speakers and 190 million second language speakers. French is the second-most studied foreign language in the world. In the 21st century, French served as the pre – eminent international language of diplomacy and international affairs, as well as a lingua franca among the educated classes of Europe. The dominant position of the French language has only recently been overshadowed by English. Its development was also influenced by the native Celtic languages of Roman Gaul and by the (Germanic) Frankish language of the post-Roman Frankish invaders.
French is one of the first three International Languages that are widely spoken across the world. The world is now a global village, the competition for jobs and business are now on the rise and this means that people have to be more creative so as to be ready to face the global challenges. This paradigm shift has made people of different professions, ages and origins to move away from the traditional education systems and take a step either physically or virtually to learn other languages so as to communicate widely as they are competing for the limited resources on the globe.
The department of French was established in the Faculty of Science and Humanities, in SRM University in the year 2003 along with other departments which were founded and established in the same year. As part of the regulations French language is one of the languages to be selected by students to learn in Faculty of Science and Humanities.
The department of French apart from part I language course offers language, basic, scientific and business Translation related subjects to the non-major elective students. These students are given the choice to study French language and translation as an elective subject in their second year.

Knowledge a Foreign Language is akin to a voyage of finding. The Department of French has always given its undergraduates the joy of learning French, the most rich, melodious and analytical language in the world. As students of a Foreign Language and French Literature, our students are proud of their culture and civilization as they learn to appreciate another culture which is very different from their own. This brings about a holistic development in our students and it contributes largely to their intelligence. We try to hone both the creative and analytical skills of our students through a series of programs conducted in Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRMIST as well encouraging our students to participate in various competitions conducted by the French Department of various city colleges.
It is also a reflection of persistent and ever-growing importance of the French language as an active tool of education and communication, especially in fields relating to cultural exchange and business in the world today for a all society that opens itself more and more toward outside world, including by encouraging the establishment of French institutions and companies in this region, the French language acquires even greater significance.
