About the Department
- Established in the year 1991.
- Offers 5 Undergraduate programs (4 years), 3 Postgraduate programs (2 years), an integrated M.Tech program (5years), and doctoral programs.
- B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering accredited by NBA and the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, USA (https://www.abet.org).
- M. Tech – VLSI Design accredited by NBA
- Approved by AICTE under Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) Scheme
- Equipped with 8 Research labs funded by DST under FIST, AICTE, DRDO, BRNS, ISRO, UGC, SERB, IEEE EDS, Xilinx.
- Established Center for Electronics Skill Development and Consultancy Services (CESD), to provide trainings on PCB design, Embedded System design, Electronics Manufacturing Services, EDA tools and RF Circuit design and have anechoic chamber for antenna characterization.
- Awarded with 5G Lab by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT), Govt. of India.
- Recognized as a Skill Hub for training of manpower on the job role “VLSI Design Engineer” under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY 4.0) scheme of Govt. of India.
- Under Chip to Startup (C2S) Programme of MeitY, Electron Device Automation (EDA) tools such as Cadence, Synopsys, ANSYS and Keysight have been made available to SRMIST to train students in the area of VLSI and Embedded System Design.
- Visvesvaraya Ph.d scheme for Electronics and IT from MeitY, GOI, is granted to full-time and part time research scholars.
- Collaborations with more than 10 industries and reputed institutes like CEERI, Samsung, Volvo, CoreEL Technologies, Entuple Technologies (Synopsys) for skill development.
- Signed MoU with Nokia Solutions and Networks India Pvt. Ltd, Centre for Reliability Science and Technology, Chang Gung University, Taiwan, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan, Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI), Nano-Academic Technologies Inc., Canada, and Numergion Technology Pvt. Ltd. Pune, India. for the curriculum enhancement, Product development and skill development of students and faculty members.
- The faculty members of the ECE department are versatile in many diversified fields. They have good research potential, with 2500+ research articles published in both Scopus and SCI-indexed journals and 97 published patents and 45 granted to their credentials.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) was established in the year 1991. The department offers 5 undergraduate (UG), 1 Integrated, 3 Post Graduate (PG) and Ph.D. degree programs. Over the last three decades, the department has grown in both infrastructure and expertise in various fields related to Electronics and Communication engineering. The B.Tech (ECE) program at the Kattankulathur campus of SRMIST is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), Government of India, and Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, USA (https://www.abet.org).
In our mission to offer outcome-based education, the department follows an industry-relevant curriculum to promote problem-solving skills and ignite students’ innovative thoughts. We also have well-equipped laboratories with state-of-the-art research facilities to support our academic programs. Our faculty members have excellent academic credentials and promising research potential. The department also has strong collaborations with professional bodies such as IEEE, IE(I), IETE, and Optica in the form of student chapters to enrich the technical knowledge and personal skills of our students.
Quality education is imparted by adopting new teaching pedagogy and industry internships. One of the department’s missions is to produce successful practicing engineers nationally and globally. We are happy to share that the alumni of our department are pursuing higher studies at leading universities in India and abroad and many others hold top positions world over. With the growth of Indian semiconductor industries, there is a high demand for skilled professionals, and the department envisions playing a vital role in preparing students to meet global standards.
Programs Offered
Research
The Department is known for its interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. Our students, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students are the mainstay of our research activities. Research interests of our faculty span a number of cutting-edge topics.
It has received significant research grants from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under Funds for Improvement of Science and Technology (FIST). Faculty members have received research grants from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) from Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Board of Research in Nuclear Science (BRNS) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), University Grants Commission (UGC), Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB). Prestigious Visvesvaraya PhD scheme for Electronics & IT from Meity, GoI is granted for Full – time and Part-time research scholars. The department has strong collaboration with industries and reputed institutes. The faculty members of ECE department are versatile in many diversified fields. They have good research potential with nearly 2000 papers published in both Scopus and SCI indexed journals and 49 published patents and 8 granted to their credentials.
Placement
In the coming years, there is bound to be huge demand for competent engineers in electronic industry. These engineers would be involved in creating and sustaining cutting edge technology to stay ahead in competition. Graduates of ECE have opportunities in Government and private companies for installation, operation and maintenance of electronics equipment and systems, design and development of complex devices and systems for signal processing, medical, telecommunication, manufacturing, industrial control, aeronautical and military fields.
Apart from this, manufacturing companies, Multinational Corporations (MNCs), research-based or industrial corporations, Aerospace manufacturing companies, Consumer electronics manufacturing, Healthcare Instrumentation, Armed forces (Army/ Air Force/Navy), many others look for candidates with ECE background.

Teaching environment and quality are central to SRMIST’s capability profile. Many opportunities are provided to our faculty members to conduct research and engage with the industry in consulting and other projects. Infrastructure
The ECE Department has 18 laboratories. These include Basic Electronics, Communication Engineering, Computing, Digital IC, DSP, Electron Devices, Electronic Circuits, Electronics Engineering Practices, Embedded Systems, Microprocessor, Microwave, MIMO-OFDM, Networking, Optical Communication, Research, VLSI Design and VLSI Simulation Labs.
