About the Department

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was established in the academic year 1992–1993 as one of the core engineering branches of SRM Engineering College, affiliated then with the University of Madras. Since its inception, the department has witnessed significant growth across all dimensions, including infrastructure development, faculty strength, and student achievements. From the academic year 2001–2002, the department’s programs were affiliated with Anna University. Subsequently, in 2003–2004, the department came under the purview of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), a Deemed-to-be University.

Currently, the department offers the following academic programs under the College of Engineering and Technology, SRMIST:

  • B. Tech. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • B. Tech. in Electric Vehicle Technology
  • M. Tech. in Power Electronics and Drives
  • M. Tech. in Power Systems
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Allied Fields

The B.Tech. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering program at the Kattankulathur campus is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org) and by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), India. The department is ranked 301–350 in the QS World University Rankings 2024 under the subject category of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, securing the 3rd position among private institutions in India and 12th overall at the national level.

The department comprises 57 dedicated faculty members with expertise spanning across various domains of electrical engineering. In recognition of its strong industry-academia interface, the department received the AICTE-CII Award for Best Industry-Linked Institute in Electrical Engineering and Allied Category for the academic year 2019–2020.

Programs Offered

Undergraduate

The undergraduate programs provide quality education in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Electric Vehicle Technology, fostering technical competence and innovation to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Postgraduate

The postgraduate programs offer advanced education in Power Electronics & Drives and Power Systems, fostering specialized expertise and research capabilities to address the challenges of modern electrical engineering.

Research

The department offers a Ph.D. program that promotes research excellence in Electrical Engineering and its allied domains, empowering scholars to drive innovation across academia, industry, and emerging technologies.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering places a high value on student placements in reputed companies and industries. The varsity’s strong infrastructure, departmental research facilities, and good lab infrastructure reshape students in all aspects and prepare them for their placements. The EEE placement team, in collaboration with the department Alumni Chapter (ACEEE), hosts a variety of pre-placement activities and training programs in which alumni share their expertise and discuss current market trends.
