Department of Defence and Strategic Studies

SRM is the first University to start B.Sc. in Defence and Strategic Studies in South India. Defence and Strategic Studies as a program, demands a specialized audience with an interest and passion that can be extrapolated into various facets of National Security.

The Defence and Strategic Studies (DSS) is a division of SRM Institute of Science and Technology that focuses on a wide range of interdisciplinary subjects such as Conceptual Aspects of war, Military History, International Relations, National Security of India, Strategic Thought, Military Psychology, Disaster Management, Maritime Security, Regional Security, Science and Technology in relation to Warfare, Economic Aspects of National Security, Contemporary Strategic Environment in India, Geopolitics and Military Geography, Cyber Security, GIS and Remote Sensing, Legal Aspects of International Security, International Terrorism, Non-Traditional Security Threats, WMD, Nuclear Proliferation, Conflict Resolution, and Peace Building, Counter Terrorism, Human Rights, Conflict and Media, Defence Journalism, Computer Applications, Game Theory, Operation Research, Police Administration, Public Administration, Practical’s – Weapon training, Map reading, Cartography, Fieldcraft and Battle craft, sand model making and war game exercise, Tank, Aircraft, and warship models, tactical and operation studies.

The University Grants recognize the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies Commission, New Delhi, offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. In addition to academic courses, the DSS conducts research and engages with the policymakers, Defence and strategic studies practitioners. The ultimate goal of the DSS is to contribute to developing effective Defence strategies and policies, prepare students for successful careers in the field, and impart advanced knowledge and understanding of Defence and strategic studies. The department offers selective skill-oriented certification and foreign language courses like Mandarin, Pastu, and Balti. The multi-disciplinary subjects would provide broader exposure to the course is more beneficial to students who want to succeed in competitive exams.

The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly SRM University) recognizes the need to study the nation’s strengths. This led to the rise of ‘Defence and Strategic Studies’ as a major subject. Defence and Strategic Studies provides students from a wide range of disciplines and professions with the opportunity to learn and study National Security.

The Department frequently conducts guest lectures, seminars, workshops, and a Faculty Development Programs, wherein experts of national acclaim are invited as speakers. Conducting such thought- provoking activities tweaks the young inquiring minds of the students & researchers to think and develop an innovative approach – which could also be ‘out of the box’. While doing so, the Department holds on to the vision of the University, i.e. “to provide an academically conducive environment” with a global audience, as shared by the Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. C. Muthamizhchelvan and Dr. VP. Nedunchezhiyan, Advisor, Centre for Research in Defence and International Studies.

The Department of Defence and Strategic Studies comes under the ambit of Centre for Research in Defence and International Studies (CRDiS) which aims to bring  all security related courses under one umbrella. The Establishment of a Centre for Research in Defence and International Studies, (CRDiS) in SRMIST, the Deemed to be the University, as an innovative step to initiate the positive development in the Research and Project activities, primarily in Science and Humanities. The Centre for Research in Defence and International Studies, (CRDiS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Army Training Command, Shimla.

Teaching environment and quality are central to SRMIST’s capabilities profile. Our Professors are the reason for our continued ability to foster vibrant and value adding learning experiences for our students. The success of our students in terms of their learning and overall development enabled by our faculty members is an area of focus of leadership at SRMIST. Many opportunities are provided to our faculty members to conduct research and engage with the industry in consultancy and other projects. This platform brings our faculty members an opportunity to expand their knowledge contribution as well as bring those rich experiential inputs to the classrooms and labs, therefore, benefiting our students.
