About the Department
The Department of Biotechnology incepted in 2003 comprises qualified and competent faculty, both full-time and visiting, with national and international experience in diverse fields of biosciences and bioengineering. The B.Tech., and M.Tech., programmes have been accredited by the NBA for a period of six years (2021–2027) and three years (2025–2028) respectively. Due to persistent improvement, the department could maintain the UG and PG student enrolment above 95%.
Semester Abroad Programme (SAP) offers students the opportunity to spend one semester abroad at prestigious universities (Harvard Medical School, USA, Lehigh University, USA, Uppsala University, Sweden, and Tzu-Chi University, Taiwan) around the globe, where they will learn to do advanced research. So far, >100 students have benefited from SAP. Research is the major thrust of our department, with diversified domains such as Medical Biotechnology, Marine and Animal Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering.
The department has been supported by DST-FIST and DBT, Government of India for research and skill development in advanced life science technologies. Furthermore, various funding agencies such as ICMR, ANRF, DST, DBT, MNRE, AICTE, International agencies such as EBP Inc., Japan, University of Switzerland, Unique Therapeutics Global, Czech Republic and few industries have financially supported our faculty members through sponsored projects with a total outlay of Rs. 741.61 Lakhs in last 3 years. There are 11 government funded research laboratories, 3 industry sponsored research facilities, and 8 academic labs with sophisticated infrastructure facilities.

Founded in 2003, the Department of Biotechnology within the School of Bioengineering at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, has consistently been at the forefront of biological sciences and bioengineering education. We offer programs that are regularly updated to reflect the latest advancements, including B.Tech. in Biotechnology, specialized B.Tech. in Biotechnology with Regenerative Medicine, M.Tech. in Biotechnology, and PhD programs.
Our faculty comprises highly qualified professionals, all holding doctorate degrees and excelling in both teaching and research in the field of basic medical sciences and bioengineering. The department boasts state-of-the-art facilities equipped with advanced research instruments such LCMS-MS, FACS cell sorter, Ultracentrifuge, providing students with unparalleled learning opportunities. We have established numerous government-funded and internationally funded laboratories across various fields of biotechnology. Our focus is on addressing both social and industrial research needs through dedicated research projects and consultancy services. We have several patented technologies that are ready for commercialization and can be offered to meet industrial needs.
Undergraduate students engage in comprehensive coursework covering both biosciences and bioengineering, complemented by practical training and a six-month project. Postgraduate students delve into advanced courses with a focus on hands-on experience, culminating in a year-long project.
From the second year onward, undergraduate students and postgraduate students are encouraged to participate in training programs, enhancing their theoretical knowledge and practical skills. PhD scholars embark on interdisciplinary projects that span various fields within biotechnology, preparing them to become adept researchers.
