About the Department
SRMIST is one of the few institutions in India that offers a B.Tech., M. Tech., and PhD programme in Biomedical Engineering that has been in existence for more than 15 years. Biomedical engineering is a consortium of biologists and engineers collaborating to develop medical devices, healthcare technologies, and services that benefit humanity. Biomedical engineering at SRM, was established in 2004 with an active clinical partnership with SRM Medical College and Research Institute. The department, since its inception, has actively participated in diversified research and teaching and has grown to become one of the best institutions in the country for the program. The department is well equipped with state-of-the-art research laboratories in the areas of Bioimaging, Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Bio signal and Medical Image processing. Students are motivated for active industrial collaboration through the industry associated “Centre for Biomedical Research and Healthcare Innovation (CBRHI)”. Our students have taken a few courses or completed projects at any one of our partner institutions abroad (Harvard, NTU, etc.), under the Semester Abroad Program (SAP). Connecting past to present, our students are placed in Top MNCs, Biomedical Industries, Government and Private Hospitals, IT Industries, and Research Laboratories.

It gives me immense pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all of you on behalf of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur campus. Our field stands at the exciting intersection of healthcare and technology, where every innovation has the potential to transform lives, improve health outcomes, and advance medical science.
Our department has always strived to be at the forefront of pioneering breakthroughs in biomedical technology, fostering an environment where science meets compassion. As biomedical engineers, we work to bridge the gap between medicine and engineering, creating solutions that improve the quality of life and reshape the future of healthcare.
Whether it’s cutting-edge medical devices, life-saving diagnostics, or advanced computational methods for healthcare, the development of next-generation medical devices, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to improve human health and well-being.
Our department thrives on the collective contributions of our faculty, researchers, and students, whose passion for advancing human health and well-being continues to inspire groundbreaking work. I am confident that our ongoing efforts will contribute not only to academic excellence but also to making a tangible difference in the world of healthcare.
Placements
There is a huge demand for energetic biomedical engineers in the healthcare industry. These engineers would be involved in designing and developing cutting edge technology in the healthcare domain. Graduates of BME have opportunities in Government and private companies for installation, maintenance, and design and development of new healthcare devices, assisting medical professionals in major surgeries, and being involved in new product development. They also help in the regulatory aspects of Medical devices.
Industry-Institute Collaboration Initiative:
As part of an industry-institute collaboration addressing the needs of the modern healthcare sector, the Department of Biomedical Engineering at SRMIST, in partnership with Capgemini India Ltd, has introduced two two-credit value-added courses: “Requirement Engineering and Medical Device Regulations” and “Verification and Validation of Medical Devices.” Students who enroll in these electives will receive preferential consideration during Capgemini’s recruitment process. Additionally, the department’s partnerships with Jajal Medical Services and Panacea Medical Technologies represent significant milestones, paving the way for advancements in research, development, and innovation within biomedical applications. Apart from this, major software companies and research-based organisations are looking for candidates with BME backgrounds.
Our students are placed in wide range of core companies, to name a few Capgemini, Siemens, Philips, GE, Medtronics, Stryker, Baxter, Zifo, Abbott, Maquet, Praxair, Transasia, HCL, Akas Infusions, Meril life sciences, KPMG, L&T, Peter’s Surgicals, Johnson and Johnson, Deloitte, Boston Scientific, AstraZeneca and also in software companies like TCS, CTS, Wipro, Infosys, HP,Genpact, Life signs etc.
