About the Department
The Department of Automobile Engineering at SRMIST, KTR Campus, started the journey in 2004 with a vision of being recognized as a department of international repute. Over the last 18 years, we have grown our expertise and competence in the core Automobile Engineering curriculum and research. We have a strong undergraduate and postgraduate program in automobile engineering with industry connections. The primary focus of our curriculum is to impart technical know-how to students and promote their problem-solving skills and innovation of new technologies. The Department offers a large number of elective courses in different domains for the students to pursue their interests.
The department has 20 faculty members and two adjunct faculties, all with a broad area of expertise and interests. With over 300 graduate students, postgraduates, and research scholars, the department’s strength is further reinforced by dedicated technicians and support staff. Our department maintains active research groups to carry out collaborative and interdisciplinary research. We have state-of-the-art research facilities to support our academic programs and research.
We have signed MoU with various organizations such as Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC), Non Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), and Valeo India Ltd for conducting joint UG/PG programs, and with Apollo Tyres, Mahindra & Mahindra, ASDC for joint research and skill development. This provides diverse opportunities for the students to work with industry projects, interns, etc, thereby bridging the gap between the industry and the Institute.

I am pleased to welcome you to the Department of Automobile Engineering on behalf of the entire SRMIST team.
The programs offered under Automobile Engineering are created to meet the needs of the Industry needs. Furthermore, the courses are distinctive in that they are taught by professionals from academic and industry experts, preparing the students for the demands of the automotive industry as well as its allied industries.
Through National and International student design competitions, the department hopes to foster excellence and emphasize practical application, enabling the students to develop into highly talented individuals. It will also enable students to pursue fascinating employment opportunities, entrepreneurs and pursuing higher studies in International Universities.

Placement
The Department of Automobile Engineering is one of the most advanced courses in the engineering arena. The main role of the automobile department is to train students in the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of vehicles from the concept stage through the production stage. The SRMIST is located very near the automobile industries in and around Chennai. Since our department is in collaboration with more than 12 companies, governmental agencies, and institutes for skill-oriented training, industry-supported labs, student exchange programs, etc., the department of automobile engineering has always been the first choice for many recruiters. The placement activities at SRMIST are being taken care of by the career center with the help of corresponding departments. The main objective of the career center is to encourage placement activities, internships, corporate relationships, and employability skill development. We are organizing an employability skill development program through professional training partners to train our students in the areas of Quantitative and Technical aptitudes, Logical and Reasoning ability, Verbal and soft skills to make sure our students meet industry standards. We also organize several guest lectures, workshops, and webinars on recent advancements in the automotive sector through several industry resource persons and alumni. We have a separate one-credit programming course “Competitive Professional Skills” in their sixth semester to get knowledge of programming such as C++, python, etc., We also provide technical training, group discussions, and mock interviews to help students prepare for the placement process. In addition, we conduct industry certified Value-Added Programs to make students industry-ready in the fields of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), etc., These skill development programs, and industry connections have resulted in excellent placement records. In the academic year 2022-2023, our students got placed in the super dream category with a higher package of Rs. 29 Lac per annum at amazon as operation managers.

Faculty
Teaching environment and quality are central to SRMIST’s capability profile. Our Professors are the reason for our continued ability to foster vibrant and value adding learning experiences for our students. The success of our students in terms of their learning and overall development enabled by our faculty members is an area of focus for leadership at SRMIST. Many opportunities are provided to our faculty members to conduct research and engage with the industry in consulting and other projects.
