About the Department

The school advocates a design philosophy that draws inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of India while simultaneously embracing the latest developments in arts, science, engineering and technology, to produce Architects of international competence. The School Started in 1992 with the mission to educate students aspiring to become Architects, who will contribute to the socio-economic and cultural development of India and the broader global community through responsible participation in the process of design and creation of the built environment. The department has eminent faculty members, composed of experienced professors and practising architects specialising in diverse research areas such as Building Science, Digital Architecture, City Planning, Urban Design, Project Management, Housing, and Landscape Architecture. The department is associated with many foreign universities around the world through a semester abroad programme, a unique initiative that provides the students with international exposure and global opportunities. SAID – School of Architecture and Interior Design has taken various research initiatives over the years to mobilize the available knowledge resources for research and also, to come up strongly with innovative solutions. Currently, there are around 60 research scholars from various parts of the country doing cutting edge multidisciplinary research in the frontier areas of Architecture and allied domains.

Warm greetings from the School of Architecture and Interior Design, SRMIST, Kattankulathur. Department of Architecture was established in the year 1992 and was later elevated as the School of Architecture and Interior Design in the year 2006 and currently offers UG, PG and PhD programs. Our school is a dynamic space where creativity meets functionality, and it has always been committed to providing hands-on exposure to subject content, ensuring that our students are well-prepared for the evolving demands of the industry. We achieve this through site visits, insightful discussions with renowned Architects, Interior Designers and Alumni. We also promote continuous skill enhancement via workshops and lecture series. With a strong foundation in design, technology, and critical thinking, we take pride in nurturing well-rounded Architects and Interior Designers who are ready to shape the future of the built environment.

Research

Research

Research in School of Architecture & Interior design is about quality, not quantity. Our objective is to create an institutional, people oriented research culture in areas such as Architectural conservation of heritage buildings, urban redevelopment and environmental planning for sustainability. We do this by creating a stimulating, constructive and supportive environment for our staff and students to undertake high quality research. We also portray the school as a center for the highest quality research and scholarship.

The School of Architecture and Interior Design has facilities to do Academic and Sponsored Research Activities. We have Full-time, part-time Ph.D. research scholars all over India working on cutting edge research topics like Artificial Intelligence, Building Acoustics, building technologies, building materials and Envelope etc under the Research Supervisor who are expertise in this domain. We have an exclusive state of art Research Groups like Architectural Heritage, Building Science, Urban Planning, Environmental Sustainability headed by a Faculty Coordinator who is specialized in the domain to carry out Collaborative Research activities in the Department. The faculty Members are working on sponsored Research Projects sanctioned by external funding agencies like UGC, COA etc. The faculty members are currently working on Collaborative Research proposals with international partners through JRS-SATU scheme and the faculty team is also working on Multidisciplinary Research Proposal by collaborating with other departments on cutting edge Research topics. Faculties have published their research outcomes in journals of repute and the students project and dissertation works are also published in reputed National and International Journals.

Our Professors are the reason for our continued ability to foster vibrant and value adding learning experiences for our students. The success of our students’ in terms of their learning and overall development enabled by our faculty members is an area of focus for Leadership at SRMIST. Many opportunities are provided to our faculty members to conduct research and engage with the industry in consulting and other projects. This platform brings our faculty members an opportunity to expand their knowledge contribution as well as bring those rich experiential inputs to the classrooms and labs, therefore benefiting our students.

Being a 4th year B. Arch student, I studied the course of Masters in Architecture and Urban Design in Umea University. I was the youngest student in my batch to study masters at the age of 21. It was a great experience to be with few of my batch mates who were very experienced and almost double the age of mine. It was a very unique experience to be and learn with the people from different parts of the world. Extreme climate conditions, various cultures, new methodologies, different languages, all these to experience at least once in a life time. My research design project that I did in Umea University was "Ostra social housing - a new typology for living". I had Prof. Daniel, Prof. Matte and Prof. Carla as my tutors. Each one of them was best at their domains and guided me throughout my design project. For my end semester portfolio review I had Dr. Tonia Carless as the head of the jury panel. She is well known for her research work in the field of spatial politics, cultural and urban spaces. I could still remember the comments that I have received on the day of my jury. "It’s a proud moment for all your professors who have guided you throughout the process. Coming from a different country it wouldn't have been very easy for you to study urban design in Sweden. But you have succeeded in that and your portfolio is the end result of that" - she said. That was it. I felt all the effort paid off finally. I would suggest every student to experience this feeling.
