About the Department

The Agricultural Extension and Communication Department is working on sensitizing the farming communities about new agricultural techniques, ideas, innovations, farm implements and types of machinery, etc., through various extension methodologies, viz., field demonstrations, farmers training, campaigns, farmers scientist meet and exhibitions etc.,

The Department offers courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Besides, the Department offers RAWE/RHWE programmes to the final year UG students of B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture and Horticulture. The course creates an opportunity for the students to stay in the villages and learn farming techniques practically on the natural ground. Most importantly, the course paves ways to transfer, disseminate and exchange the scientific methods learned from the institution to benefit the farming communities. The Department allows final-year students to expose themselves to International and nationally reputed Institutes and their activities through the All-India Study Tour Programme. It provides the students with rich knowledge of different geographic, agro-climatic zones, culture and settlement patterns throughout the country.

The Department equips with an advanced Audio-Visual Lab consisting of a Video production unit, Audio recording and mixing consoles, audio and video conferencing facilities.  It helps the students equip themselves as an expert in the Transfer of Agricultural Technology to the farming community, especially in digital means.

The language laboratory is another top crown of this Department, equipped with 31 numbers of computer systems, headphones, mic, and it is helpful to make the students well-versed in communication and pronunciation supported with language software “Orell Talk”. It encourages students to use ICT (Information and Communications Technology) for effective content delivery. Also, it fosters students’ personalities, communication, and soft skills, aiming to equip them to effectively navigate the challenges faced in today’s highly competitive global environment.

Regular need-based and location-specific on-campus and off-campus farmer’s training conducts through the Farmers Training Cell of the Department. A total of 32 trainings were conducted for the farmers of different blocks of Chengalpattu district on different Agricultural and Allied practices like Mushroom production, Apiculture, Value addition, Integrated Farm Approaches, etc., to earn additional family income to ensure livelihood security of the marginal, small farmers and self-help groups.
