
GERMAN
The Department of English and Foreign Languages has been offering value-added German courses since February 2019. This course is offered every semester and is conducted after college hours between 5pm and 7pm. A batch encapsulates a maximum of 25 students. So far, we have trained students for A1 and A2 Goethe Institute certification. It has helped students to get higher study opportunities in Germany. It has also helped students in placements.

GENDER STUDIES
The Department of English and Foreign Languages, offers short courses namely ‘LGBTQIA+ Spectrum’ and ‘Fathoming Gender’ for all the students of SRMIST under the banner Gender Studies 101. These courses propagate an objective viewpoint on gender studies, feminism, LGBTQIA+ and all the associated topics. It creates an awareness in everyone to approach Gender Inclusivity and Sensitivity to eliminate bias in gender diversities. The courses are considered as a part of the department’s social responsibility and are decided to be offered without any charges. The course will be offered after the college hours.
Duration: 30 hours 3 days per week.

JAPANESE
Japanese language has a lot of carrier opportunities both in India and Japan. Hence the University of SRM Science and Technology is offering JPLT courses, starting with N5. The course is conducted by the Japanese native speaker and the course is offered to B.Tech and M.Tech students. The teacher also inculcates Japanese culture and day to day concepts (business language) to enhance the Job opportunities. Already students have completed N5 &N4. Currently we have a new batch for N5.
Duration: 1 year, 2 Classes in a week.

Essential English - I
The Department of English and Foreign Languages has launched a 45-hour short-term course on basic communication skills in English titled Essential English-I for the students who have low level of English proficiency. The course is designed to make the students meet the requirements of global communication challenges in their personal as well as professional life. Moreover, it improves their presentation skills, public speaking skills, and leadership skills. The motive of the Essential English-I is to make the students imbibe English and wield it naturally as a competent language user.

Advanced Research & Academic Writing
The Department of English and Foreign Languages has launched a 30-hour short-term course on research and academic writing entitled, Advanced Research and Academic Writing (ARAW). This course aims to train the research scholars of SRMIST on meeting the requirements of professional research writing. The course teaches the scholars on writing processes, strategies, research writing conventions, proper analysis of research documents and clear presentation of research papers for global acceptance and visibility of their research. The course is planned to make the students participate and enrich their learning experience. The comprehensive objectives of the course enable the course instructors to stay focused on training the scholars to excel in research and academic writing.

JLPT N4
The main reason to study for the JLPT N4 exam is that the knowledge you acquire when studying for JLPT N4 is the gateway to becoming conversationally fluent in Japanese. By this, we mean that by mastering the contents of JLPT N4, you gain the theoretical knowledge to participate naturally in everyday conversations. This is because JLPT N4 includes all the basic grammar points, vocabulary, and kanji to allow you to smoothly express yourself. You will also learn plain Japanese and humble Japanese (keigo, 敬語). This further allows you to be more flexible in conversations in various situations The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N4 is a step up from N5, requiring a higher level of proficiency.

JLPT N5
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N5, which is the lowest level of the JLPT, focuses on basic Japanese language skills. The course outcomes or objectives of JLPT N5 typically include: There are five levels of the JLPT, with N5 being the easiest level to pass and N1 being the most difficult. You do not have to pass a certain level before moving onto the next level i.e. you do not have to have passed N5 before you can do the N4 exam. Each exam tests four things: reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and listening. In Japan, the exam is normally held twice a year – once in July and once in December. There are many overseas testing sites, but not all of them offer the chance to take the test twice a year.

Diploma in English as a Second Language (DESL)
The Department of English and Foreign Languages is proud to offer a one-year Diploma in English as a Second Language (DESL). This program is specifically designed to meet the needs of students who have completed their previous academic programs in languages other than English, providing them with the necessary tools to enhance their reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammatical proficiency in English. Through a well-rounded syllabus that includes practical applications and a capstone project, the DESL program aims to ensure students achieve a high level of English language competency, critical thinking, and professional communication skills. This program provides a comprehensive approach to mastering the English language, ensuring students develop essential skills across all key areas. Reading and Writing covers the importance of reading and writing, reading comprehension strategies, writing genres, cohesive devices, professional writing skills, and critical thinking. English Language and Literature introduces English language structure and explores literary genres, including works by Tagore, Goldsmith, and Ibsen, along with creative writing techniques. Listening and Speaking focuses on phonetics, listening strategies, vocabulary, conversational skills, group discussions, speech delivery, storytelling, and job interview preparation. Grammar and Usage addresses sentence structure, verb tenses, modifiers, modal verbs, reporting, conditionals, and common grammatical errors. The program culminates in the Capstone Project, where students apply their acquired skills in a comprehensive project. This diploma ensures that students gain the necessary skills for academic and professional success.
