Language offered

FRENCH

The French language was introduced in SRMIST in the year 2006. Every year 1000 plus students learn the French language during their first year. Students are trained for attaining certification courses like DELF. The department collaborates with the French embassy to facilitate French nationals to visit SRMIST through faculty and student exchange programs. We train students to gain admissions to universities in France (on demand).

GERMAN

The department of English and Foreign Languages has been offering German language since the year 2006. Every year around 1500 students enroll for the regular German course. In order to increase the global career opportunities for all the students, German certification courses are offered at A1.1 and A1.2 levels for which the examination is conducted by the Goethe Institute, a non-profit German cultural association operational worldwide with 159 institutes. Knowledge sharing sessions are conducted between the EFL department and the representatives of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce to help the students identify their job opportunities.

JAPANESE

Engineering students benefit significantly from instruction in the three Japanese scripts: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. As more and more Japanese clients seek software solutions from India, knowing the language is a definite advantage for fresh engineers who intend to join software companies. Four of our faculty members attended the Teacher training programme offered by Japan Foundation (JENESYS), in Japan. Around 60 students took up the JLPT N5 course offered by the Department of English & Foreign Languages. Approximately 15 students attended the JLPT N4 course offered by the Department. Around 30 students participated in the MARUGOTO course catered by the Department. This exquisite language is taught by certified faculty members and native Japanese teachers.

CHINESE

Chinese, known as Mandarin language, is one of the most widely spoken language in the world. This popular language was introduced at SRMIST in 2011.In SRMIST, the professional Chinese team provides both traditional and simplified Chinese learning courses. The course is not only trained with speaking, listening, reading writing skills but also cultural awareness and cultural understanding. In SRMIST , Mandarin native speakers will bring you the best quality Chinese language learning experience .

KOREAN

The Korean language was introduced in the year 2008 to Engineering students. Only native Korean speakers taught the language until 2018. The blooming of Korean firms in India motivates our students to choose Korean in their academic pursuit. Learning the Korean language in India can bring about numerous advantages in terms of career opportunities, cultural exchange, personal growth, and international engagement. It not only opens doors for professional success but also promotes better understanding between two distinct cultures.

SPANISH

Spanish was introduced in 2022 in addition to other languages in the Department of English & Foreign languages. Learning a foreign language is similar to embarking on a journey of discovery. The delight of discovery has always been associated with the Spanish language. The dedication and enthusiasm of the faculty, assist students in reaching nothing less than perfection. They understand the significance of their culture and civilization as they learn to respect another culture significantly different from their own as a Foreign Language. Spanish is the primary language in 20 countries worldwide, and about 75 million people speak it as a second or foreign language. The Spanish language as a second language grew 60% higher, according to the 2020 edition of Spanish in the world by Instituto Cervantes. The department is proud to offer such an exquisite language to the students of Engineering and Technology at SRMIST.

RUSSIAN

The Department of English and Foreign Languages at SRMIST in collaboration with Mordovia State University (MRSU), Saransk, Russia, has established a Russian Studies Centre, to offer Russian language courses in 2024, as part of an international educational initiative. The centre offers introductory courses, tailored for first-year students, provides foundational knowledge in phonetics, grammar, reading, writing, listening, and comprehension. Additionally, it incorporates insights into Russian literature, music, cinema, history, and philosophy. For students interested in deepening their understanding of the language, advanced certificate courses are also offered. All courses are taught by native Russian speakers, with methodological support from MRSU. The Russian Studies Centre within the department offers a wide range of textbooks, manuals, and exercise books that address essential communication needs. Russian is a key language in fields such as science, technology, and international relations, and with the strengthening ties between India and Russia, proficiency in the language can unlock new academic, career, and travel opportunities for students.
