About the Department

The fascination with journalism is here to stay. Keeping in mind the absolute essential of ethics and ethical journalism in print and broadcast outlets, the Department of Journalism and Mass communication shapes students with the zest to be journalists of tomorrow. Exposure to print, visual, Public Relations, and New Media is significant under the guidance of highly qualified and experienced faculty. Regular lectures by experts in the industry combined with seminars, workshops, and periodic visits to various media houses make it obvious why SRM is the one place all future journalists head to. “Young Journalists’ Association” for students conducts events, seminars, conferences, workshops, and other industry interactions for our students. Our students also focus on research in the final semesters, and many universities abroad are keen to absorb our students. Our students have also continued their higher education and graduated from Leeds University, Oklahoma University, etc. The Department also provides opportunities for students to work on an internship in various fields of Print, Electronic, and Online media. Students are guided by expert faculty during their specialized research projects.

Welcome to the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. We have been in the field of journalism education for more than a decade. We started with the BA Journalism & Mass Communication in 2007 and then expanded to PG Diploma, Postgraduate, and Ph.D. degrees.
Our department offers an innovative and inclusive curriculum, which also suits the requirement of the ever-evolving journalism industry. Our students are placed in various leading media houses worldwide like Reuters, The Hindu, The New Indian Express, NDTV, and Times Network. The primary motive of our department is to develop our students into valuable members of society. We produce world-class journalists, mass communication experts, documentary filmmakers, media managers, etc.
Our faculties are awarded various accolades and awards from around the world. We have a diverse pool of faculty from across India and abroad. Research

Media research analyses the communication process and the relationships between media organizations and their target audiences. The social and psychological characteristics and impacts of various mass media are the subject of media research. Its goal is to collect data on various forms of mass media, such as the amount of time people spend watching a particular medium, the influence of various media on society, the substance and presentation of information, or the success of programmes in reaching their target audiences. As a result, the media has come to rely on study findings for all significant decisions. In all sectors, both commercial and public, the rising demand for knowledge has produced a need for research and researchers.

Infrastructure

Media Lab

The competitive media field looks out for media students who are competent enough to handle various equipment and software. This awareness has brought us to add various practical papers to the syllabus and to aid these papers our department is equipped with the following:

  • Computers equipped with Adobe premiere suite, to teach video editing, graphic designing, and photo editing.
  • DSLR cameras with multiple lenses and other photographic equipment to make students familiarise themselves with photography and cinematography.
  • Microphones, for practical papers such as radio and podcast production.
