The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) held its 21st Convocation for the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Dr. T.P. Ganesan Auditorium, Kattankulathur Campus. The ceremony was graced by Dr. V. Narayanan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), who addressed the graduating batch, sharing key milestones from India’s space journey and inspiring them to contribute to the nation’s growth.
In his address, Dr. Narayanan reflected on India’s humble beginnings in space exploration, tracing the journey from the first rocket launch in 1963, using a rocket donated by the United States, to the present day, where India stands alongside the United States in several satellite technologies. He noted that India has launched 433 satellites for 34 countries using its launch vehicles and has achieved global firsts, including reaching Mars orbit on the very first attempt and landing near the Moon’s South Pole in 2020.
Highlighting recent achievements, he spoke of the world’s most cost-effective satellite launch carried out in July 2025, the development of a 5,000 kg rocket stage in a record 34 months, and the country’s growing capabilities in applications ranging from weather forecasting and disaster management to telecommunications and fisheries monitoring. He also outlined ISRO’s future goals, including tripling the number of operational satellites in the next few years, launching a space station by 2035, and sending astronauts to the Moon by 2040.
Encouraging the graduates, Dr. Narayanan stressed the importance of applying their skills across disciplines to help India become a developed nation well before the centenary of independence. He concluded by extending his best wishes for their personal and professional success and praying for SRMIST’s continued growth.
