Highlights of the department
LABORATORY & INSTRUMENTATION
The Post graduate research in the Department of Pharmacognosy mainly encompasses on the identification, isolation, and characterization of bioactive compounds from natural sources, as well as their potential therapeutic applications. The key areas include
- Scientific validation of Herbal Medicine (Phytochemistry, efficacy, safety, mode of action and clinical trials)
- Systematic analysis of medicinal plants and thereby collect, collate and disseminate relevant scientific information in the area of herbal medicine
- Reviews of experimental research in the field of Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry, Quality Control, Standardization, Phyto- Pharmacology.
- Bio-prospecting of medicinal plants to isolate new chemical entities
- Promote studies on methodologies to develop new formulations with focus on the difference between patent and classical formulations.
The safety and effectiveness of herbal therapeutic products depend on the identity and purity of the crude drugs. For the correct identification and standardisation of crude drugs as well as finished products we require robust, fast and reliable techniques with sophisticated analytical instruments. Our students in the department of Pharmacognosy handle UV-Visible spectroscopy, Orbital Shaker cum incubator, Microtome, Muffle furnace, Colony counter, Sterility testing unit, Zone reader for their Practical experiments and UG and PG Projects.
