B.Tech. - Mechatronics Engineering with specialization in Immersive Technologies

Immersive Technologies include those, which alter or extend physical reality by leveraging 3D data. In today’s world, the way humans interact with the computer has become seamless and intuitive with immersive technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. Education in this technology is only available through rudimentary online courses and practice in industries. The immersive technologies in general termed X-R technologies (where ‘X’ could represent Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed) and Haptics are outcomes of a complex integration of multiple technologies like sensory data fusion from sensors such as cameras, inertial measurement units, real-time data acquisition, and computing, UI & UX design and computer graphics. The diversified knowledge skills required for the successful implementation of a Specialization in Immersive Technologies with a natively multi disciplinary and interdisciplinary program like Mechatronics Engineering make it a synergistic combination. The multidisciplinary nature of the program is directly relevant to the National Educational Policy NEP 2020’s emphasis on more holistic and multidisciplinary education. As per the NEP 2020 immersive technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality are considered an emerging technology specialization. The immersive technologies market is estimated at a CAGR of Rs. 8000 billion worth of the world average by the year 2029. The immersive technologies market primarily covers the components namely Hardware, Software, and Services in the proportion of 54%, 30%, and 16% respectively. The program covers all foundation-level knowledge and skills components relevant to Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, 360 videos, and Haptics with ample depth in both design, hardware, and software development thus imparting a holistic approach in education, which is again in line with the NEP’s mission. The nature of these technologies and the role they are expected to play shortly makes it the right time to offer a specialization program in this space. The proposed program will serve as a dual benefit of an already interdisciplinary mind trained to apply it for a focus on a particular class of application. The applications of these technologies shall be in the following applications: Training & Learning, Emergency Services, Product Development, Sales & Marketing. The Center for Immersive Technologies in the SRM Institute of Science and Technology has more than adequate equipment for the conduct of the specialization program successfully. The Center comprises hardware and software for Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality, and Haptics. The specialization program comprises practice-dominated content enabling the students to be imparted with the essential knowledge and skills with modern software tools and state-of-the-art hardware. The curriculum is prepared with a significantly good emphasis on practical skill development components of the education, which is in line with NEP 2020 guidelines. The broad outcome of the program manifest in both the XR- developer and XR-designer perspective.
