July 4, 2025: The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST-KTR) commemorated National Statistics Day 2025 with an engaging academic event that paid tribute to the 132nd birth anniversary of Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis, the father of modern statistics in India. The occasion, jointly organised by the Centre for Statistics, School of Public Health, Department of Mathematics & Statistics (FSH), and the Department of Mathematics (Engineering & Technology), brought together students, faculty, and researchers to celebrate the profound influence of statistics on society and science.
The day began with a keynote address by Dr. R. Ramakrishnan, Scientist G (Retd.), ICMR–National Institute of Epidemiology. Drawing from his vast experience, Dr. Ramakrishnan spoke about the critical role of statistical methods in public health and biomedical research. He encouraged budding statisticians and researchers to embrace the interdisciplinary scope of data science and analytics in addressing global challenges.
Prof. A. Vinay Kumar, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Faculty of Science and Humanities, Management, and Law), delivered the presidential address, highlighting how data-driven decision-making is transforming governance, economic development, and national policy. He emphasised the growing demand for statisticians in a rapidly digitising world.
In a special address, Dr. Hari Singh, Dean, School of Public Health, stressed the importance of statistics in epidemiology and evidence-based policymaking. He noted how data has become central to designing and evaluating public health interventions, especially in the post-pandemic world.
The event also featured insightful sessions and discussions that encouraged students to appreciate the value of data, not just as a tool for research but as a driving force behind innovation, public policy, and societal progress.
SRMIST extends heartfelt thanks to all speakers, participants, and organisers for making the event a meaningful celebration of Prof. Mahalanobis’ vision and the continued relevance of statistics in shaping the future.
